Nuclear Safety
Thousands of Americans work in the nuclear power and nuclear medicine fields. Safety and security are very important aspects of those fields and many rules and regulations govern the operations.
Despite fears that Americans may have, fears about nuclear power plants are misplaced. In more than 30 years of safe operation of nuclear power plants show that today’s nuclear plants have become safer and safer. Reports of safety “events”—as required by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission—show that incidences have been nearly zero in the last decade.
No one in America has ever died due to a commercial nuclear power accident. It is actually safer to work in a nuclear energy plant every day than in an office. From 2003 to 2007, 526 workers were killed in the oil and gas industry and 162 were killed in coal mining.
