National Nuclear Science Day
National Nuclear Science Week 2012 will engage educators and students nationwide in a one-day signature event, “National Nuclear Science Day” held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago on Jan. 25.
Webinars, an interactive art experience and talking with an IndyCar driver of the Nuclear Clean Energy IZOD IndyCar #78 are all part of the various ways to “Get to know nuclear” the theme of the national week-long celebration.
“What a rare opportunity to experience nuclear science with leading national experts, through colorful works of art and more,” said Jim Walther, the Director of the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History.“ It is an honor to work with the Illinois Institute of Technology to host such an impressive array of individuals to tell the story of nuclear science.”
Webinar presentations will address a wide variety of nuclear topics.
● “Green Power for the Digital World” will be presented by Marv Fertel, CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, and Natalie Woods, engineer at River Bend Nuclear Power Station in Louisiana, at 10:00 a.m.
● “What’s Cool About Nuclear Science and Why Our Country Needs Nuclear Electricity” will be presented by Mark Peters, Deputy Director for Programs, Argonne National Laboratory, and Justin Thomas, Principle Nuclear Engineer, Argonne National Laboratory, at 11:00 a.m.
● “Careers in Nuclear Science and Technology from the Inner Atom to Outer Space” will be presented Eric Loewen, PhD, President of the American Nuclear Society, Chief Consulting Engineer, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy at 1:00 p.m.
● “Shaping the Nuclear Future” will be presented by Jeff Terry, Chair, Advanced Test Reactor Users Organization Director, Health Physics Program and Associate Professor of Physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m.
Approximately 800 to 1,400 classrooms will view the webcast throughout the day, representing more than 20,000 students and teachers across the country in the areas of science and math. The webcast is open to the public and instructions and sign up information can be found on the home page of this website.
Other activities for the day include the Pop Atomic Studio Art Show and Interactive Art Experience that uses the power of visual and liberal arts to enrich the public discussion on nuclear energy as well as an opportunity to interact with the Nuclear Clean Energy IZOD IndyCar #78 and driver, Simona de Silvestro. Also, master-level and doctoral-level students will be on hand to explain and discuss research projects during lunch to physics, chemistry and science students from the local area.
National Nuclear Science Day is orchestrated by a partnership between the host organization, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and nuclear industry partners, including the National Science Teachers Association, Exelon Corporation, the American Nuclear Society, the Nuclear Energy Institute, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Entergy Corporation and our host university, the Illinois Institute of Technology.
The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the entrance of the Sandia Science & Technology Park, opened as the National Atomic Museum in 1969. Chartered by Congress in 1991, the Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate. Exhibits provide an objective, accessible window into nuclear science from the origins of atomic theory, the complexity of the political scenarios contributing to World War II and the height of the Cold War, production of clean nuclear electricity, to modern-day advances in nuclear medicine with forward looking glimpses into the future of this fascinating and exciting field. http://www.nuclearmuseum.org
