Explaining the Nuclear Power Plant in the Backyard to Children
Hi,
My name is Amelia Frahm. I’m the author of the Mom’s Choice Recipient” Nuclear Power: How a Nuclear Power Plant Really Works!”
In case you have not heard there’s now a children’s picture book that explains how a nuclear power plant works that puts a creative spin on it that’s both entertaining and educational.
For the past two weeks I have been in Texas, visiting elementary schools near the South Texas Nuclear Generating Station.
I was honored when the principal of Van Vleck Elementary, in Van Vleck, Texas told me that I was helping kick off National Nuclear Science Week.
Van Vleck High School participates in a mentoring program provided by NPI/Texas A&M University. The school purchased books that older students could gift to younger classmates that they were mentoring. The program encourages interest in nuclear science.
I visited seven Texas schools and spoke to almost 2000 students and their teachers.
Many of the children I spoke to had parents who work in the nuclear industry. However, as one parent told me, this does not mean they understand what their parents do. Her child knew she worked at the nuclear “plant” and as she discovered thought she worked at a plant store as in florist.
My presentation to students usually lasted about 30 minutes. I showed a diagram and explained how a nuclear power plant works and then read the story and showed PowerPoint illustrations of how a nuclear power plant “really” works as told from the view point of a chubby lab rat and pretty blue bird.
Afterwards I also showed a video featuring newsman Birderson Cooper and the book’s rat character who is now known as Professor Chubby Rat. The video showcases a fission chain reaction.
Pictures of some of the schools I visited may be found on my blog:
http://cancer-tankerousmommy.blogspot.com/ and more information about me and my children’s book about nuclear power can be found on my website: NutcrackerPublishing.com.
Nutcracker Publishing is a small micro publisher, run by me! Often there’s not enough hours in the day to do everything I would like to do.
I wish I had contacted you earlier and perhaps could of participated in this year’s Nuclear Science Day Event. Please keep me in mind for next years event or any other activities.
Radiate Brilliance is what I have called my marketing campaign to schools and what I usually say when autographing books
While the National Nuclear Science Week celebration may end this week, promoting nuclear science and getting the word out about my children’s book is a year round endeavor.
If you have ideas on how we can work together and help each other, please call or e-mail me.

“Radiate Brilliance” is a great marketing slogan. I really like it.
Mary Claire Birdsong, age 17, co-founder of Go Nuclear! Inc. and member of WIN, would also like to give some elementary school presentation in her community, similar to yours. She has given presentations on nuclear energy, thus far, to adult audiences and university audiences. The younger students are a goal. I will order your book and see what ideas she comes up with. Please feel free to offer advice or collaborate as much as possible. You are doing excellent work out there!

Thank you, Susan! It should arrive soon.
Lisa,
I would love to hear Mary Claire’s ideas, and we need to talk. I think I can help her and we can definitely collaborate. E-mail me and we’ll sit up a time that’s convenient for us.
If you like the book- PLEASE- go to Amazon.com and write a review. I have two; one-starred reviews from people I suspect have never read the it. Ha.

Thank you for the excellent article 。 USB Digital TV Tuner
My husband and I were very impressed with all the issues that she addressed. They will be a big help to us, not to mention to the many families that are now and in the years ahead that will be caring for their parents and/or aging family members! Great job, Kathryn! It’s a “keeper”!
